My Life as a Fake - Peter Carey
$12.95
Author - Peter Carey
Published in 2004 by Faber & Faber, UK
Softcover, 276 Pages
Size - 20cm * 13cm
In Melbourne in the late 1940s, a young conservative poet named Christopher Chubb decides to teach his country a lesson about pretension and authenticity. But over the ensuing years his audacious act of literary ventriloquism takes on a much darker resonance. Having fled Melbourne for the seedy, sweaty streets of Kuala Lumpur, Chubb finds himself, just as Frankenstein was, haunted and pursued his own creation.
Peter Carey
was born in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Australia, in 1943. He studied Science at Monash University, and wrote advertising copy to support himself during the early part of his literary career. Australian identity and historical context play a part in several of his literary works.
`In a beautifully crafted piece of storytelling, Peter Carey has produced an immensely powerful work that will resonate for generations.' - Nick Groom, Independent
`Confidently brilliant.' - John Updike, The New Yorker
`At a time when so much contemporary fiction is largely autobiographical, it's wonderful to have a writer who seizes on some historical events . . . and turns them into such richly creative and compellingly readable inventions.' - Tom Rosenthal, Daily Mail
`Fast, furious and fantastical stuff .. . Carey is Australia's finest living novelist.' - Blake Morrison, Guardian
`This is a great octopus of a novel, every tentacle stretched out and fixed round the dark, inky centre of the hoax and the monstrous phantom born of it.' - Geordie Greig, Literary Review
