The SAS Brigade, as it then was, played a special part in the liberation of France in 1944: an irregular force airdropped deep inside enemy-occupied territory and deployed to inflict damage and delay on the Germans out of all proportion to the small number of SAS men involved. In all, they mounted some thirty six operations, sabotaging railways, calling in air strikes and ambushing enemy patrols, often working alongside the local maquisards.

This book is a fascinating account of the behind-the-lines operations that preceded and supported the D-Day landings and the breakout from Normandy. Many attacks were spearheaded by British and American special forces, the SAS and US 'Jedburgh teams' (ancestors of the 'Green Berets'). From the early hours of 6 June 1944 to the destruction of the German army in France, this is the story of how small teams of SAS men fought their secret war behind enemy lines.

Illustrated with 8 pages of B&W photos and 18 maps.
